Woman’s Sash, trariwe Temuco/ Villarica area, Chile First half of 20th century Cotton, wool, complementary warp technique, braided fringes 116 x 3 ins (290 x 7.5 cm) The stark indigo-dyed blue of the Mapuche woman’s mantle or the man’s wrapper was alleviated only by the vivid color and figuration (typically of red and white) decorating the long, fringed trariwe sash which secured the garments. The belts were woven with interlocking and color-reversing geometric, plant, and anthropomorphic motifs, some of which were of Pre-Columbian origin, related to Inka and northern Chilean cultures, while others reflected Spanish colonial influence.
