Stone figure Kashmir, India Blackstone 4.5 inches high (11.3 cm) 8th – 10th century Ex private collection, Northern CA Well worn figure in dark stone, most likely ancient Kingdom of Kashmir ca 8th century. Seated in padmasana with proper left hand extended palm forward, possibly holding a loop of beads trailing down, while the right hand holds an unidentified object to the chest. Long hair covers the back of the neck and simple loop earrings are well-defined. Two holes in the lower face define the corners of the mouth, but facial details are worn away by worship and cleaning practices. One eye outline survives. It most likely represents a Hindu deity or saint, possibly young Krishna, who is sometimes shown with long hair.
