Pilgrim’s Coat Japan Meiji period Asa (hemp) 38.5 in x 50 in :: 98 cm x 127 cm The Pilgrim’s robe, invoking memories of a distant past, was worn as an act of commitment to religious pilgrimage. It is woven of undyed hemp with calligraphic Siddham script, which was used to write Seed Syllables in Sanskrit. The central character depicted on back of the coat is Acala, (Fudo in Japan), a wrathful deity and powerful protector of the Buddhist teachings. This syllable is surrounded by those of other dharma protectors. Administered by the residing priest, faint vestiges remain of red temple stamps. Price on request
