Dan Ceremonial Ladle Cote d’Ivoire, Africa Wood 22 ¼ inches Early 20th century Dan carved wood ceremonial ladle, from the Dan people of Liberia, West Africa. Spoons like this were used by the most prominent woman in the village as a sign of her power, prestige and generosity, it was used to distribute food. Strong carved face with traces of white in eyes. Incised geometric pattern on back of bowl. It is in good condition, appropriate for its age, use, and medium. Scuffs and nicks here and there along with deep patina and signs of wear from traditional use. Previously in the collection of a retired former Firestone manager, who worked at the Firestone Plantation in Liberia in the 1930-40’s. Inherited through the family. SOLD
