Prestige bowl Probably Ulawa Island, Solomon Islands Wood, mother-of-pearl shell Circa 1900 or earlier 4 inches high by 18 inches long by 9 inches deep (10 by 46 by 23 cm) Ex private collection, Northern CA; ex Tad Dale, NM A feast bowl of graceful ovoid form is inlaid with the classic notched-triangle shaped abalone shell pieces on the upper rim and at the handles, which are in the form of stylized birds. All of the inlays are intact, and there appears to be a varnish over the entire bowl. The auction label affixed to the bottom reads: “This and the following five lots were collected by the present owner’s father, Captain E.L. Cardale (1879-1966) Lieutenant on the H.M.S. Torch, surveying in the Pacific 1905-1908; he visited the Solomon Islands, Papua, New Guinea, Gilbert Islands, Fiji and Australia.” He was the son of Admiral Charles Searle Cardale (1841-1904), officer of the Royal Navy.
