Shaman, Chupicuaro, Mexico – SOLD

$45.74 $70.89
Peyote-Eating Shaman Chupicuaro, Mexico 500 BC – 200 BC H 5.7″ x W 5.5″ x D 5.5″ 14.5cm x 14cm x 14cm Finely sculpted, painted, burnished, then fired clay (ceramic) Hunchbacks and dwarves in Pre-Columbian West and Central Mexico were usually considered spiritually empowered shamans. She is shown eating, probably a peyote pod, and her left hand probably once held a peyote pod or plate of them (now broken off and gone.) The eye-dazzling geometric design in black and red on tan, so classic and famed on fine Chupicuaro ceramics, probably represents hallucination. SOLD
